Evening all,
A very good start to 2009 today. 6-1 comfortable victory against a team who on paper could have caused more problems but credit to the whole team, we didn't give them a chance to play. The fitness levels of the players is 10/10 thanks to the training sessions. The fitness played a big part today, especially in the 2nd half when we were strolling along at 2-0 and the opposition had no choice but to attack more and chase the ball which resulted in them tiring and gaps being created in their defence and we successfully capitalised on this by scoring some well-worked goals. The 1st half was fairly comfortable but the beginning of the 2nd was a bit chaotic at first due to them pressurising us more. This is something we'll have to look at in training as it will happen more often if we go a couple of goals ahead and against the better teams in the league it could result in us being punished.
My observations are that the centre midfielder needs to drop back almost to be a 3rd defender freeing a defender to push forward into space and look to recieve a pass. We also need to be more alive on counter attacks in our favour. There were a couple of times today when Aitor convincingly collected the ball first go from the corner but he had all 4 players surrounding him. We need to work on getting out faster.
Credit to Matthew for scoring a screamer with his right foot (bet he can't do that again)
A mention to Luisda and Darren who played some nice inter-changing passes which resulted in 2 goals. A special mention to Aitor who had a very solid game in goal. He was very convincing on collecting corners and starting counter attacks followed by some very good saves. Brave as a lion. Credit to Paul for the excellent interception and beating one man followed by a pass that led to a goal as well as an all round good performances (though be careful you don't jump in to the challenge too soon lad.
Praise for Ken, the oldest man on the pitch today but you held your own and didn't panic on the ball and played some good stuff. Keep up the good work. Big up for Pablo for almost breaking the fingers of their keeper in the 1st half. Iker was a calming influence on the ball as always with some key passes. Big up to myself for not getting a yellow or red card after my moment of roid rage (I'll try not to drink a whole can of red bull next time )
Last of all big thanks to Pedrosa for keeping things in order on the bench in terms of lineups. Thanks to Rob as well for getting his arse out of bed putting his shirt on and sitting on the bench with the boys even though he's crippled. Thanks for the photos too. They'll be going up during the course of the week.
Next week is a massive game. It's our derby game and could have an effect on how the rest of the season goes. We've won 4 games in a row now and the last time we lost was the 8-5 shambles game. That was a big turning point of the season. Since then every single player has stood up and risen to the challenge and has been fantastic. There is no reason why we can't go and make it 5 wins in a row next week and enhance our promotion prospects and possibly go on to win the league which would be the icing on the cake.
APS Bermeo? Bring it on!!! Ha'way lads!!!!
A big thank you to all the dedicated fans who got their arses out of bed to come and cheer us on.
See you all during the week or next weekend. Have a good week!!
